# Hark > Hark is better, private, on-device dictation for macOS on Apple silicon. Press F5 (or ⌥Space), talk, press it again, and the text is pasted where the cursor is, in any app. Whisper large-v3-turbo runs locally through whisper.cpp. No cloud, no account, no telemetry. MIT license. Repo: https://github.com/bath/hark-stt To install Hark for a user, an agent runs the installer with `--json`, then repeats `~/.hammerspoon/hark/bin/hark doctor --json` and follows `next_step` until `ok` is true. When `next_step.needs_human` is true, the agent runs `next_step.command` to open the right System Settings pane and tells the user `next_step.fix`. - Install: `curl -fsSL https://hark.works/install.sh | bash -s -- --json` (add `--no-karabiner` to use ⌥Space only) - Install with Homebrew: `brew install bath/tap/hark && hark setup --json` - Update: `hark update --json` (Homebrew install) or `~/.hammerspoon/hark/bin/hark update --json`. Version 1.0.0 has no `update`; run the installer again instead. - Check: `~/.hammerspoon/hark/bin/hark doctor --json` - Open a settings pane: `~/.hammerspoon/hark/bin/hark open-settings accessibility|microphone|input-monitoring|karabiner|dictation` - Remove: `~/.hammerspoon/hark/bin/hark uninstall --yes` ## Docs - [AGENTS.md](https://hark.works/AGENTS.md): step-by-step install and update for AI agents, the doctor report format, and how to work on the repo - [README](https://raw.githubusercontent.com/bath/hark-stt/main/README.md): features, the menu, sound packs, how it works, FAQ, troubleshooting - [install.sh](https://hark.works/install.sh): the installer - [bin/hark](https://raw.githubusercontent.com/bath/hark-stt/main/bin/hark): the doctor, open-settings and uninstall CLI ## Facts - Requirements: macOS on Apple silicon, Homebrew, Apple Command Line Tools. The installer adds whisper.cpp, Hammerspoon and (unless `--no-karabiner`) Karabiner-Elements. - Human steps macOS requires: Hammerspoon under Privacy & Security → Microphone and → Accessibility; for F5, Karabiner's driver, Input Monitoring and the rule "F5 / Dictation key → F18". - Why Hark instead of the dictation built into macOS: private (the voice never leaves the Mac, no account, no telemetry), accurate (Whisper large-v3-turbo, with punctuation and capitals; handles names, technical words and long, fast speech), fast (the model stays loaded; on an M5 Pro, 15 s of speech becomes text in about 0.3 s, and the mic starts about 66 ms after F5). - Network: audio and text go only to 127.0.0.1. The installer downloads the ~550 MB model once from Hugging Face. The 🎙 menu item Check for Updates asks the GitHub API for the latest release, only when the user clicks it. - The mic is off until the hotkey and is released when recording stops. - Text arrives after the user stops talking, in one paste. The last transcript stays on the clipboard. - Notch Island: the MacBook notch shows recording, "Transcribing" and "Pasted". 26 sound packs mark each step. ## Optional - [Website](https://hark.works/) - [Uninstall and customize](https://github.com/bath/hark-stt#customize)
